Surrogate Grandma
Logline
A woman yearning to become a grandma locates the little girl that her only daughter had as a surrogate for a deserving couple, ready to do anything, including murder, to become a permanent part of the child’s life.
Synopsis
Helen yearns to be a grandma, but she has one big problem - her only child Karen is already 35 and doesn’t want children, no matter how much her mom tries to convince her that she would love having one. Upon finding out that a family friend has become a surrogate for a deserving couple, Karen gives it some thought. A regular couple at the restaurant where she works, Anna and Kyle, wants to have a baby, but it’s dangerous for Anna to use her own eggs.
Karen offers to provide the egg herself and carry a baby for them with no attachments to it. The couple takes her up on the generous offer and Karen soon conceives. Now the hard part - hiding what she has done from Helen for as long as possible. It’s not long before Helen discovers Karen is pregnant and she is ecstatic to have her first grandchild, until Karen informs her that it’s not her baby. She even lies and claims it’s not her egg, either to keep Helen from being even more upset.
Karen becoming a surrogate throws a wedge in-between her relationship with Helen, who wants her to change her mind and keep the baby. Little Maddy is born and handed over to the proud couple immediately. Karen has zero attachment to her. Helen finds out days after the birth that Karen delivered the baby but there’s nothing she can do to have a relationship with the infant. She doesn’t even know who the parents are. To make matters worse, Helen discovers that Karen did use her own egg to conceive so the baby is their blood relative.
Five years later, Helen keeps an eye on the local elementary schools in hopes of spotting a little girl the right age who looks enough like Karen. She is very lucky to find Maddy on her first day of kindergarten. She is the spitting image of Karen at that age. Helen just knows this has to be her granddaughter. When Anna picks up Maddy after school and takes her to the local park, Helen follows them. There, she bumps into Anna and comes off as a loving grandmother type who has no grandchildren.
When Maddy chokes on a piece of hard candy that Helen has secretly given to her and Anna is too panicked to save her, Helen steps in, earning Anna’s trust. When she needs a sitter after school a few hours each day, she offers the job to Helen, who gladly accepts.
Helen grows very close to Maddy, even protective of her. When Anna’s sister Kim convinces Anna to let her watch Maddy instead, Helen kills Kim and makes it look like a drug overdose. Instead of solving Helen’s problem, it makes things worse. Anna is pregnant and decides to quit her job for a while, so they won’t need Helen any longer. Helen snaps, making an attempt to kill Anna and Kyle, and kidnap Maddy, but Karen learns of her mom’s devious plans and arrives in the nick of time to save the innocent family.
